Amazon.com Review

The 16-inch Remington chain saw delivers several strong safety features. A low-kickback chain and reduced kickback guide bar reduce the chances of danger. The rear hand guard safely removes your operating hand from projectile chips, as does the front hand guard for the stabilizing handle. The 3-1/4-horsepower motor provides plenty of power for pruning and trimming. It also handles better under the duress of thick lumber (including heftier firewood) and smaller deck and lawn projects than its 12-inch counterpart, though we still wouldn't recommend using it on larger felling, which will stop up the blade and possibly do damage to the engine. The black plastic design offers little relief from the numbing effects of vibration, but, then again, the motor won't dish up anything you can't handle. Aside from the assembly, which poses a challenge even to the most seasoned chain saw operators, this is a good, basic, quality saw for light-duty lawn projects. Limited warranty.

Summary: Leaks oil like crazy 2008-10-25
Comment: I used it twice and it worked fine, but it leaks oil like crazy. It leaked all of the oil in the tank all over my garage floor. There's no reason for this. It's just poor design. If you buy it, plan on draining the tank after every use or cleaning up a lot of oil.

Summary: Great for what it is intended for 2006-01-26
Comment: Strong for what is essentially a light duty saw; reliable. I've cut down two sizable trees with it, and cut them into firewood, along with a lot of other use. The only shortcoming I have found is the lack of a chain brake. Be careful to wait for the chain to stop before you do anything like setting it down after you release the switch.

I've noted some small complaints in other reviews. To address them:

The bar/chain oiler is GRAVITY FED...it will "leak" oil just sitting around...it is supposed to.

The chain does lose tension with use. ALL chainsaws do, and you must keep an eye on it, the adjustment is easy. But careful tightening the bar nuts: they fit into a plastic housing that is easy to damage if you overtighten them.

As with all other electric power tools, use a large gauge extension cord. For convenience, I use a 100' cord 12 gauge. With this saw, that still gives 115 volts at the end of the run, and causes no problem with the motor.

A chainsaw is easily the the most dangerous power tool a homeowner will ever use! SERIOUS INJURY is a moment's carelessness away!!! FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS AND SAFETY PRECAUTIONS EVERY SECOND. And keep the cord well behind you as you work! And hold onto the manual! It should be reviewed regularly, is especially useful to replace the chain properly, and I haven't found it on the 'net anywhere.

Summary: tough little saw 2004-11-15
Comment: I bought this saw last year and have cut down fairly good size trees and trimmed a lot on my 1 acre lot. After 3 hurricanes I had to get a 350 Husky because some of the trees are just too big, and there is much to do.

But this little saw is still going and I use it a lot. Here are some tips that may prolong your electric saw's life:

1. Never run it continually for long periods so it does not get it real hot. It needs to have rest breaks.
2. After sawing for 10 or 15 seconds let up for 30 seconds or so.
3. Rotate the bar frequently and keep the oiler about 3/4 filled with motor oil__(manual recommends SAE 30W).
4. When rotating the bar, take off the chain drive sprocket and grease the needle bearing. (Be careful removing the sprocket so the needle bearing does not fall out).
5. Oily sawdust builds up very fast. Take off the chain cover and clean it out after every use, and re-adjust the chain. It only takes a few minutes.
6. Check your motor frequently to make sure it is not getting too hot.
7. Don't let the chain get too dull. Have it sharpened or replace it.
8. Above all....be safe. Don't cut with the tip.

Summary: Great for Price -- Read the instructions before use! 2004-10-30
Comment: A friend of mine gave me a bunch of wood with several logs. Sure, it's like getting the present of a lot of work cutting and splitting, but what the heck! I bought this Remington and it has already proven its worth. I've already cut some pretty sizable logs with it and can honestly say it is more than living up to expectations. I've seen a few negative reviews about this product, but can honestly say that the instruction book preps you for these.

So, what about the complaints:
** As long as you are not constantly cutting wet hardwood, this works great. I've cut a ton of logs, many different kinds and this is working great!
** No problems with a slipping chain! The instructions point out that a new chain will stretch as it is getting broken in -- and that you will need to tighten it several times after every few cuts until it gets worked in.
** Oil and leaks -- The book ahs a whole section on the way the oil feed system works. unfortunately, this is why it "leaks" when left unused. I left it overnight and it did in fact seep oil -- not a lot, but enough to be annoying. the book very clearly states that this is expected and that you should empty the oil when you're not using the saw.

So, why not 5 stars?
It's a great value -- but there is a definite reason to buy a better chain saw. An electric like this has obvious disadvantages -- having an extension cord a main one. Also, I really don't like having to drain the oil. In any case, a good purchase and it should meet most needs.
