Summary: Great Saw, but Be Careful to get the Right Version 2008-02-14
Comment: I purchased an e-series 340 last year (2007) and it has been a great choice, and an excellent value, for cutting firewood to heat our home. The 345 essentially identical to the 340 and 345 models except displacement (piston bore) and all are very light and very smooth (thanks to super-effective vibration dampening) saws that will do the job for most non-commercial users. They are probably also useful for professional arborists and landscapers. They start SUPER easy if you get the right features (see below), they are made with quality components, finding a shop to work on them is easy, and they are fairly easy for routine maintenance.

I HIGHLY recommend getting the Husky Forestry helmet (with hearing protection), the chaps, and the soft case. I have found the soft case to be super convenient, big enough for all needed field supplies, and a lot better looking (not to mention cleaner) when stored in my house.

The 345 has enough power to make short work of 12-14" wood using a 16" bar when the chain is sharp. You will want to go with the 350 if you need to buck a lot of wood in the 14-16" range. You should be aware that all of these saws use a narrow kerf chain and bar combination that is called the "micro lite" system in Oregon terminology. This is a super arrangement for limbing and bucking smaller logs because it reduced the power needed to make a cut an generates less waste. The problem is that when you have to make two cuts meet (e.g to avoid pinching) there is less margin for error and it can actually take a lot longer to get work the work done. Also, both the chain and the bar wear faster under a given load. I found that the included bar didn't last very long at all. Apparently it is the equivalent of a "consumer grade" bar in Oregon parlance. I HIGHLY recommend getting an Oregon Micro Lite Pro bar as soon as possible. These hold up a lot better. If you work with big stuff you might also consider getting some standard kerf cutting equipment. Just remember there is a reduction in cutting efficiency, so again, you may want the 350 if you plan to do a lot of work with large diameter wood.

Whichever displacement you get, make sure your say has the following features:

A prime/purge bulb to get fresh gas in the carburetor.
A decompression valve (also called "smart start" by Husqvarna.
And a conventional (2 bolt) side chain tension adjustment mechanism.

The "standard" 345 model sometimes doesn't have the purge valve, which makes it much harder to start when cold or if you run out of gas. The newest version of the "345e" usually comes with a "tool-free" chain tensioner that you DO NOT want. IT just doesn't hold up in the field. If you cant find a 345 with this equipment, but the 350, which has the right features standard.

Summary: Simple, Light, Tough and Easy to handle! 2007-11-08
Comment: I love the 345e series for its easy spring assisted starting. Just an all around great saw for less than $300.00. I owned a "steal" MS290 which was actually stolen from me go figure, so I decided on the 345e since they are easy to find parts for and had excellent reviews from owners. I much prefer this saw for my weekend warrior wood cutting ..I may have bought a larger model if I was using it for my everday job, but the 345e does all I need it for and more. Make sure to keep check of the screws for the engine cover, they do tend to loosen with excessive use. Happy Cuttin'!!

Summary: What can I say? 2007-01-09
Comment: This saw started right up and went through a cord of wood in no time. It cut 17" pine like the proverbial hot knife through butter. Oak was almost as quick, but the low kickback chain did cut slower in such hard wood. The thing that impressed me the most was how smooth this saw is. After running electrics that just about rattled my arms off this saw is a joy to run. It's plastic, but it's fantastic!

Summary: Husqvarna 345e chainsaw 2006-08-14
Comment: I researched chainsaws for about 3 weeks before I purchased this saw. When I first used it I was VERY impressed with the performance, ease of use, etc. Let me preface my next remarks with this statement: I buy the best tools that I can afford. I take very good care of them and do not abuse them or mistreat them. That said I make them work VERY hard, often requiring them to perform to 100% of their capability.

After approximately 9 or 10 months of irregular use (sometimes no use for weeks at a time, then used for 5 or 6 days straight, 4 and 5 hours at a stretch) I noticed that any chain oil I had put in the day before leaked out over night. I also noticed that when I put fuel in (you have to lay the saw on its side to add fuel and/or chain oil) that the fuel ran out the other side of the saw.

I took the saw to a Husky dealer for repair, thinking it was a cracked fuel line or stretched fuel line.

The dealer called and told me the crankcase was cracked and Husqvarna would NOT warranty the repair. He wanted $170 to repair it.

To say I was disappointed in not only their warranty, but the fact that it broke at all is being kind. I owned one of their cheap saws (Poulan Pro) for 10 years without a single problem. I loaned it out (I'll never do that again) and it came back with an exploded engine so I thought I would buy a quality saw that would last for years. Instead I got the Husky 345e. BIG MISTAKE.

I will not buy another Husqvarna product, ever. Partly because of the quality, but mostly because of the lack of customer service, and warranty. This is NOT a quality product.

My next gas operated saw, hedge trimmer, string trimmer or what ever I buy the will be Echo. I have YET to talk to someone who has a complaint about them.

Think twice about the new, low quality Husqvarna products. They aren't your fathers chainsaw. Those may have been quality way back when, but not now. Even more disturbing, it doesn't seem as if they care.
