Comment: I purchased this chainsaw from Amazon in early October (2009) and
in the two months since then have sawed at least one cord of firewood.
The saw has performed beautifully, and I am delighted so far with
this purchase. The saw was easy to assemble and the instructions
for starting it and keeping the chain properly under tension were
clear and work. I am not sure what was done to recondition the
saw, but when it arrived it was clean and showed no signs of use.

I should preface the following by noting that this is my first
experience with a chainsaw, so I am not an expert. The chain does
require frequent tightening, but the frequency decreased considerably
after the first hour or two of use. I attribute this decrease to the
chain "breaking in." I have been cutting mostly oak, and after the
third tank of fuel I sharpened the chain, which made sawing
dramatically easier. My advice is to keep the chain sharp as both
user and saw will not have to work as hard. I suspect that some of
the problems with keeping the proper tension reported in other reviews
follow from either a dull chain or from replacing rather than
sharpening a dull chain, in which case there will be another break
in period.

In summary- so far so good after two months. I hope to get years
of good service from the saw.

Comment: My grip is not with Poulan Reconditioned gas saw it's with the so called Factory Recondition operation,I ordered a Poulan Pro PP4218avx 42cc gas saw thinking that it would be perfect for taking down a couple of trees in my back yard , when first received the box with the saw I know something was wrong the 18inch saw was in a 12INCH BOX OK maybe I have to put it together I open the box and Yep someone asleep at the wheel, who ever reconditioned the saw never placed the chain guide back on it was not even in the box that's why it was able to fit in [...] Guys Wake Up.

Comment: It's not a bad saw for the money. Got it out from the box and was able to put it together in five minutes. It has decent power and does a pretty good job on cutting wood. It's a great saw for light use.

It does use a lot of oil for lubricating the chain though; it really drinks like a fish. Because the oil was injecting onto the chain while cutting the wood, the oil would get mixed up with the wood dust and it will get it all over the unit. The so-called "tool-less chain tightening system" is a good thought but not well engineered. Because the oil would get into the "tightening mechanism", it actually lubricating the locking mechanism and cause it to loosen up. I winded up tightening the chain every few minutes until I jammed a tooth pick into the dial to prevent it from loosening.
